We got taught by a couple old slingers that told us ever story and the whole history of hot dogging in Phoenix. The "hot dog wars" of the early 1980s and hints of scandal and organized crime. But mostly this ethic. This code of "we're all in this together".

I don't know if it's like this in other places but here theres this stark line between us nice guys and the meanies. The meanies will try to get to the top by tearing the rest of us down. Us nice guys are always looking out for each other.

In one of the most conservative states in the union, we have this little closet socialism going. No vendor pays for food at our carts and whatever they have, they just give us. If anybody needs ice. If anybody needs a jump start. Us old schoolers make tours of events and other vendors and the word is "anything you need, just ask".

We have the meanies on the run. Heh. Last time I encountered a meanie, they alienated all of us at this event and wouldn't you know it, they got stuck on the side of the road and the whole caravan of us drove right on by. If that was our cart we would have had a small army helping out.

Moral of this story? Be one of the meanies and you probably won't be in this business long.

Be a nice guy. Always look out for the other guy. We of all people are in this together. That's the code.

That's a nice code. I guess I'll find out the code in my city once I get out there.
